Every piece is individually constructed, hand-built and fired to earthenware temperature. Coloured glazes are then applied and the pieces fired again. Some glazes are not 'food safe' but, then, these are decorative pieces and meant to be looked at. They are not functional items.
Whilst I can roughly repeat a pattern, the finished item will always be unique and no two pieces can be exactly the same.
The work is primarily influenced by textiles, the colour and movement within their patterns and the desire to produce pieces that elicit a tactile and emotional response. So, the bowls, for instance, feature a myriad of colours, together with ragged edges and gentle folds. There are worn holes, frayed areas and loose buttons unfurling strands of thread so that something of the fragility, history and narrative which imbues every quilt is reflected in the quilt bowls.
Much of my work clearly references a history of making that is inherently feminine, (quilting/needlework), calling on the predominantly female tradition of decoration and embellishment.
